Year 12 students talk about the issues that they have selected for their projects.
Senior students select their own issues
Duration: 01:36
Transcript
Steve Andrew: The progression on from year 11 to year 12 is that the students are given a context, which is recreation, and they identify their own issue. So the reason for selecting this type of approach is that the students are now becoming available to select issues that are of interest to themselves. They select issues such as fishing issues that they’ve identified.
Student 1: So we have to find an issue and find problems within this issue and solve it. And so what I’ve chosen to do is a skim board, a sand board.
Student 2: The issue I decided to address was the issue of not being able to, when fisherman go surfcasting or fishing off a wharf, not being able to take the right amount of gear because they, it’s either too heavy or too bulky.
Student 1: The general skim boards out now are made out of material that is not sustainable to the environment. So what I’ve decided to do is first of all make my project out of a different sort of material that is sustainable to the environment and is able to grow relatively fast so it can be mass produced.
Student 3: The issue I’ve chosen this year is wakeboards. What I’m trying to do is get as many of the unsustainable materials out of the project as possible, and then as well as trying to keep the costs down.
