Manipulating, forming, and transforming

Students in year 10 describe manipulating, forming, and transforming materials.

Duration: 01:51

Transcript

Student 1: We covered materials, which was manipulating them, forming them, and transforming them.

Student 2: Manipulating is like cutting and drilling and bending to change the shape or size of the materials.

Student 3: And forming materials is when you take two or more, say liquids and solids mixed together, and you sometimes use a catalyst to speed up the process. This is shown in these two things that we made in tech a few weeks ago.

Student 4: We were transforming materials. Through transforming materials we were heating them up to bend them easier and cleanly. Through doing this, it was helping make the projects easier and cleaner, and to transform materials to heat it up and change the same materials shape and size.

Student 1: When we were forming new materials we were putting polyester resin and a catalyst together, which were two liquids. We then added colour and stirred it and left it. And in putting it in the shape, we also gave it a mould. And the two liquids, after we put the catalyst in, they began to harden and this was the result. And then with this one, we were wondering how we could make this stronger, and so we decided to add a fibreglass matting to the polyester resin and the catalyst. And because of the fibreglass matting, it’s harder to break and you can bend it more before it breaks and cracks. The reason that it is cracked is cause we added lots of catalyst to make the effect faster so that we could see how it was hardening.
