Literacy Online

TKI's Literacy Online aims to help teachers gain an understanding of the literacy demands within subject areas and required by the curriculum.

Each learning area has its own language or languages. As students discover how to use them, they find they are able to think in different ways, access new areas of knowledge, and see their world from new perspectives.

For each area, students need specific help from subject area teachers as they learn:

  • the specialist vocabulary associated with that area
  • how to read and understand its texts
  • how to communicate knowledge and ideas in appropriate ways
  • how to listen and read critically, assessing the value of what they hear and read.

The Youth Guarantee initiative provides young people more choices, ways, and places to achieve NCEA level 2 or equivalent. These pathways support learners in developing their own pathways towards future work and careers.

Competenz

BCITO

BCITO work in partnership with employers and industry to set skills standards and qualifications for the construction industry. They develop skills standards and qualification specifications for 15 trades.

New Zealand Institute of Food Science and Technology (NZIFST)

The New Zealand Institute of Food Science and Technology is the professional link for people in the food industry who apply science and technology to the processing and distribution of foods. The institute promotes food science and technology. It holds regular branch meetings, technical sessions, and an annual conference, a high level of member contact and participation is maintained.

Industry partnerships and competitions

Cyber Skills Aotearoa

Cyber Skills Aotearoa logo.

Grok Academy and CORE Education have created Cyber Skills Aotearoa, a programme to help develop cybersecurity skills and dispositions in ākonga in Years 6-13. 

The Wonder Project

Engineering New Zealand provides the Wonder Project. It is a series of hands-on STEM programmes that fit with the curriculum. 

Sir Paul Callaghan Eureka! Awards

Competition for year 11–13 students to deliver 12 minuter presentations about how an application of technology will benefit New Zealand.

Royal Society Te Apārangi

The Royal Society Te Apārangi supports science and technology education in New Zealand by running programmes and competitions for students and teachers. They also aim to link science and technology education providers with teachers, students, schools, and each other.
