Technology as a part of a cross-curriculum inquiry
Anne Bunton explains how she used an inquiry topic of time to look at ANZAC and also follow technological practice and create some ANZAC biscuits with students.
Technological experiences at Motat
Green Bay primary students had a focus on world war one. The technology learning area included a focus on the nature of technology, characteristics of technology, and in particular how things had changed over time. The students visited Motat and considered the changes in communication devices over time.
Discussion questions
- Why have communication tools changed from the time of world war 1 to present day? For example students could choose to trace the development of the telephone during time and consider the reasons for change. Reasons for changes include such things as changing needs, fashions, attitudes, ethical and environmental stances etc., or the development of new materials, skills, and knowledge.
- What food items were sent to New Zealand soldiers by their families in world war 1? What do people send to their families overseas in the services today?
- How have these food items changed and what are the reasons for this?
- What are some of the changes in technology over time that have impacted on how families keep in touch and how they show that they care about each other when they are away from New Zealand.
