Kathy Chandler and her year 1–2 students discuss technological outcomes and what technologists do.
Year 1–2 future technologists
Transcript
Kathy Chandler: Do you think if my granddad could have chosen one of these, which one do you think he would have chosen, Ben? I think he might have chosen that, because this one didn’t help him at all did it? It might have been comfortable for him but it didn’t do the job. So it’s very important when people are designing something, it has to do the job it’s intended for.
Kathy Chandler: Yes, after this lesson the way I was going to assess the learning is orally, and there was an activity that I was giving them at the end, where they have to do a little design project themselves and think about the materials and components, and the purpose, why they are doing it, who it is for, and why it’s like what it is.
Kathy Chandler: Well scientists have been studying this bird (can you move back), which is called a woodpecker, and they found that they have special skulls, special heads, that are reinforced and extra strong. And they’ve got lots of layers, and they are now actually designing a helmet that is similar to a woodpecker's head.
Student: Good ideas for people!
Kathy Chandler: Exactly.
The person who invented them, who does technology because they design and make things, so they would be a technologist, and you might be technologists one day designing and making things too.
But right now you’re going to be technologists, you’re going to be designers, of a bike safety helmet for yourself. Things to think about, the technological outcome (that’s what happens when we make technology), that’s your helmet, what purpose will your helmet have? What is it for? What’s its main use? You also need to think about what will be important in your design. What materials you might need to use. What special features it might have.
Kathy Chandler: So I think if they can do that activity quite well, it will show me that they have understood the lesson.
